Thanks! I had to leave out the college point yacht club scene, Fake heart attack at the mafia bagel trial, escaped monkey shooting and so much more. Lots of stories in CP!
Ha! Every line is so good! "no self-respecting clam swims the bottom of the Sound that would not die happy and sing triumphantly while he steamed his young life away if he knew he were to be sepulchred in Philetus Dorion!"
It's nice and quiet in the interior, but along the edges it can be pretty industrial. Near the concrete and asphalt plants (which are also near the DSNY facility that ships garbage downriver) a constant stream of trucks line up to get loads of material all day before fanning out into the city.
Back in the 60’s, we frequently drove by Adventurer’s Inn on our way from the Bronx to visit family on the Island. Every time we drove by, coming or going, I had an unspoken, completely unrealistic hope that my father would exit the road (is that the Grand Central or the Cross Island?) and take us there. Alas, that never happened.
As it turned out, I drove from CT to Brooklyn yesterday for the first time in years and spotted some of the buildings in your College Point photos as we zipped along the Van Wyck.
The way NYC treats its waterfront areas, particularly in the boroughs outside of Manhattan, is borderline criminal. Industry was allowed free reign until they trashed the shorefront, then they closed or moved on and left the detritus for others to deal with. Ugh.
"Fligth" on the ride, "Flihgt" in your retelling. The word is cursed!
Once again, a great look back at a bunch of stuff I had no idea about. My husband once saw 4th of July fireworks from a Goodyear Blimp when he was a child. He still talks about how cool it was to this day. All I can think about it how unsafe that was.
I really had to fihgt my spell check to get that in there! That sounds like an amazing way to see a firework show to be honest. I would never do it though!
We must revive that pie-run-pie contest!
A friend just suggested we do it with pizza instead.
One medium pizza pie to start, a full apple pie to finish.
That’s actually a great idea! Get a balanced meal and your exercise in.
Somebody get Joey Chestnut and Kobayashi on the phone!
I think the entire USA has now succeeded in joining the Fat Men’s Club!
“Boatloads of cheerful lobsters!”
Terrific issue! Only gave me like 83 story ideas!

I love all of this
Thank you!
The NYT article about the Fat Men's Clambake is maybe the greatest piece of journalism I've ever read. Thank you for linking!

Like LIC or Greenpoint before the developers showed up? 🤔
The difference is those places have subway access.
100%. Could build out the ferry system more too, but it’s really getting embarrassing how bad we’ve become at building subways compared to Asia
Here's a taste of the "Coastline" of College Point and Whitestone. Views are spectacular and the Parks are improving - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeAcAxpYTZ0
Loved this! I'll need to make my way out there sometime soon.

You missed your chance to punch the kid in the gorilla suit!
Darn!

Loving those bandaids! Innovative 😀
Gets the job done!
“corpulent clubs of conspicuous consumption…” Well done, sir!
Felt a little much but I couldn’t help myself.
Perhaps a bit Spiro Agnew-esque, but I liked it fine.
Fascinating!
