Like a small New England fishing village within NYC limits. The Staten Island Railway has a station stop at Prince's Bay (apostrophe included, according to the MTA) for those who are adventurous and would like to spend an afternoon walking around the town and head toward the beach. The SIR will take you to Prince's Bay from the ferry terminal at St. George (about a 30 min ride).
This was so enjoyable to read. Much natural beauty in SI and large, interesting looking old homes...who knew? I may be an ex-New Yorker but SI is a foreign country to me, along with Brooklyn, my birthplace, and the Bronx. Bronx is foreign most of all as I at least have taken the Staten Island Ferry and did work in Brooklyn for 7 years (eons ago). I guess I can claim familiarity with only two of the five boroughs. Ha!
I love all the birding news in this one. Someday I may have to take the trek to see this ornithological Ibiza. We get purple martins here in IL, but I've still never seen one!
I knew about oysters and NY, but it's absolutely crazy that New York Harbor contained nearly half of the oysters on the planet. Like what?? Coincidentally, my soon-to-be-college kid has been hanging out on Staten Island with her friends lately. I have no idea where they go, but they love it there!
Okay, Weirdest Building History of All Time Award goes to the former Seguine palm oil plant.
Of all the ways to go, “Death by Peacock” strikes me as fairly decent!
I'm going to have to strongly disagree here.
FWIW, peacocks are my favorite animal.
I have a new found appreciation, but I'm also glad I don't live across from 17 of them.
And TIL they like Crackerjack! Who knew?
I think its really just the toy surprise that they like
Ornithological Ibiza! I love it.
such a scene
We purple martin landlords thank you and salute you!
Thank you for your service!
I was not prepared for a neighborhood of bird-sized Victorian homes on stakes.
Now I feel justified in being more unsettled than impressed by peacocks.
Just make sure you’re packing crackerjacks

If I had the space, I’d definitely be tempted to put up a house
