Wow RIP, Omero Catan. He would have loved waiting in lines for stuff in NYC today!

Very True! He would have dominated the cronut/Supreme scene.

Another fun stroll through an interesting neighborhood. I didn't know about Dangerfield, nor Crew Gardens, nor about Mr. First; but this line about the realtor takes the cake: " For the next couple of weeks, Ricatto received numerous tips, including one that claimed it was Jesus who stole the signs. That turned out to be a hoax." Thanks for the fun read.

Rodney Dangerfield may not have gotten much "respect" in his lifetime, but his comic legacy is impeccable.

Phil Ochs, on the other hand, really didn't get much respect in his lifetime- part of the reason why he ended up committing suicide...

I've seen The Witness. A beautiful documentary.

As low as the Times has sunk these days, it's worth remembering that even in its better era it still did some awful things.

I'm way behind as usual, but this was a great post (as always). Being young protestors in the late 60's and early 70's, we loved Phil Ochs' music and still do.

Anyway I should have taken notes as I went through this post...so many photos to comment on.

By the way, I kept trying to think where that last rather weird photo in the Little Italy post would have been, but then I remembered the picture of the shop window with all the religious figurines or whatever and, sure enough, there it was. Haha!

You got it! I had to double dip on that one...Thanks Katie!

The birds in the audio were mostly house sparrows, with a crow at the end. But the truly surprising one was the common nighthawk near the beginning. That's not one I hear every day.

The AI images with the song are fascinating and bizarre. Thank you for sharing.

And I'd give Rodney's wife some cash just to get rid of that disgusting bottle of fluid. Ew.

You may not hear a common nighthawk everyday, but compared to the rare nighthawk.. Are you a birder or did you use an app to identify the songs?

Expand full comment

I'm a birder AND I used the Merlin app to identify songs. That's how the common nighthawk made itself known. The house sparrow and crow are second nature. Once the app picked it out, I went back and listened for the nighthawk, and sure enough!

I was the DIT on a Kitty Genovese movie called 37 that was more like a (European style) psychological thriller. It was a lot of fun and the production design was stellar with the classic 60s fashion and cars and stuff.

It was also shot in Forest Hills (exteriors) and The Bronx (interiors). Honestly not as bad as that movie Bushwich, which outright starts at the Church Av stop of the G train.
