Fascinating post! Enjoyed all of it ... especially the capture of the plane flying over the storage units! Great history also! I know nothing of Flushing except that The Nanny (Fran Drescher) used to mention it for a laugh every once in a while. Thanks for this great post!

Thanks John! So glad you liked it. Apparently, Fran is from Flushing IRL.

This was a fascinating read. I lived in Flushing for several years before moving out of state in 1989. I've been back to Manhattan many times to visit my brother but only once did we go back to Flushing in all these years. That visit was probably around 1999. I wouldn't recognize it now. The home we paid $66,500 for is now over $1,000,000.

Wow! Yeah, Flushing (like the rest of NYC) is changing so quickly. Sometimes it’s hard to recognize somewhere you knew well from even 10 years prior. The good news is when I’m done with their project I can just start all over again

Great post. The history, the photos, the casino buses, and Peaches n' Clean Cleaners.

Thanks so much Katie - it's a fascinating place!

I hope you’ll address the Flushing Botanical Gardens where I learned to do Tai Chi! Get there at 7am.

I will definitely visit the Gardens! No promises on 7 AM though.

I second your opinion re: the dosas at the Temple!

We have a consensus! So good. What's your favorite dosa?

I’m old skool. Masala dosa.

You can't beat the classic though I am intrigued by the wonderous conical Pondicherry dosa.

I hope the rezoning doesn't go through and Whitestone survives. Those kind of old-school bowling alleys are a major part of American leisure history.

I fear Whitestone's days are numbered. There's always Melody Lanes in Sunset Park. For now...

I grew up in flushing in the early 2000s and the dosas were the talk of the Indian community. Glad to see them still there!

Still there, still delicious
