This fantastic Berenice Abbott photo shows the Josiah Blackwell house, built in the 1850s. Josiah was a dry goods merchant and descendant of Robert Blackwell, the namesake of Blackwell’s Island (now Roosevelt Island) in the 17th century. By the time this photo was taken in 1937, it had been converted into a boarding house.
